New Belly Dance & Yoga Class Starting Soon!

Scarf Dance Flyer

New 6-week classes start this Tuesday, July 19, 2016 at Mystic River Dance Studio in Memphis!

In the belly dance class, we’ll be learning a beautiful scarf choreography by Shahna of little Rock.  The music is Lei Khalinee Ahbelk.  It requires two narrow silk scarves (about 3 inches wide by 3 feet in length). We’ll have scarves on hand to borrow or for purchase at the start of the class.  The dance features lane changes, cascades, mirroring a partner and other group formations.

The yoga + pilates focuses on mind-body awareness.  We’ll focus on toning core muscles, breath work, concentration and balance.  Each class ends with a relaxation exercise.

If you have questions or want to register, contact Valentina at graceflowyoga@aol.com

Yoga & Pilates Home Practice Videos

Greetings Friends!

Naturally I’m all in favor of group exercise classes. The benefits are numerous. First off, they are a great way to meet new people who share your values (health, fitness, and fun!!) and who are likely to keep you motivated and inspired to meet your goals.  Practice time seems to go by a lot faster when you’re with a group.  Another advantage of group classes is consistency. Having a regularly scheduled class can help you develop a regular routine.  A third benefit is that instructors are generally trained to offer safe and effective exercise programming.  We take into consideration the need for warm-ups, cool-downs, focus on particular muscle groups, etc.  When we practice on our own, it’s human nature to skip poses that seem “boring” or to focus on our favorites.

All that said, sometimes we just have to practice on our own due to scheduling or logistics.  For that reason, I’ve compiled a few of my favorite yoga and Pilates videos below.

Blogilates – Cassey Ho has a bunch of videos with core-strengthening exercises. She’s so upbeat and peppy that she makes me smile even when she’s hurting me.

If you’re looking for a more mellow style, Tara Stiles is great – she has a wide range of yoga videos for beginner and intermediate practice.

Yoga Journal has a lot of practice videos geared to specific activities and populations. For example, here’s a sequence recommended for trail runners:

Rodney Yee has some excellent videos as well for a variety of levels.  He practices in gorgeous places with pretty cool music.
